Wisconsin Veterans Visit Temple Beth El: Joint Sisterhood/Men's Club Event
Sunday, June 9, 2024 • 3 Sivan 5784
9:15 AM - 12:15 PMSwarsensky Social HallJoin TBE Sisterhood and Men's Club for the opportunity to view two traveling exhibits from the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, focusing on women veterans and Vietnam veterans, and to hear from retired U.S. Army Warrant Officer Richard "Rick" Berry, volunteer at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, about his and others' experiences serving in Vietnam and returning to the states.
The morning begins with light nosh, available from 9:15 to 10:00 am, and viewing of two traveling exhibits from the Wisconsin Veterans Museum: I Am Not Invisible (IANI) and Wisconsin Remembers: A Face for Every Name. IANI began as a program featuring 20 photographs of Oregon women who were military veterans. Now a nationwide program, the IANI campaign strives to increase awareness and generate dialogue about the role of women veterans. The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, through the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, created their IANI exhibit to highlight this diverse, experienced, and important segment of the veteran community. The second exhibit, Wisconsin Remembers: A Face for Every Name, is a tribute to lost life and lost potential, featuring a photo for each of the 1,161 Wisconsinites officially listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, and additional photos for those listed on the Highground Veterans Memorial in Neillsville, WI.
At 10:00 am, Rick Berry, U.S. Army, will give a presentation on his and other veterans' experiences serving in and returning from the Vietnam War. The presentation will last approximately 45 minutes, followed by Q&A and more time to view the exhibits.
Rick Berry grew up in Stamford, CT. After seven semesters of college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. In the fall of 1965, he joined a U.S. Army warrant officer program where he was trained to fly Bell UH-1 Iroquois “Huey” helicopters. After completing flight school, Warrant Officer and helicopter pilot Berry joined the A Company, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam from May 1967 through May 1968. For his Vietnam service he was awarded the Air Medal and 17 Oak Leaf Clusters, a Bronze Star Medal, a Bronze Star Medal with V Device, and a Distinguished Flying Cross. Berry completed active duty with the 7th Engineer Brigade in Germany and was honorably discharged in December 1969. He earned BA and MS degrees from the University of Connecticut. He served as a wildlife biologist and natural resource manager in Madison, WI, and retired from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1995. He is a dedicated volunteer with the Wisconsin Veterans Museum.
